概要: Among the hospital departments, outpatient department should be the one where many patients could wander from the right path. The purpose of this study is to find out the guidelines for the planning of the safe and comfortable way-finding environment for the outpatient department. First, 190 Japanese hospitals built after 1985 with 300 or more beds were classified by the space components of the outpatient department from the way-finding design point of view. Next, comparative analysis was made on the information signs for the patients at 5 hospitals. These 5 hospitals had different kinds of space components. It was found that the visual acknowledgment by the patients heavily depends on the amount of information gathered from the space components as well as from the information signs. Therefore, by the good utilization of such space elements as light court and well space, we could reduce the stray patients even with less number of information signs. 続きを見る

概要: Japan is experiencing a rapid ageing in its society and various styles of housings are being offered to the elderly people. A large number of the ageing population wish to continue to live in their same homes even when their physical abilities are weakened. Ministries in charge are publishing design guidelines for the dwellings for elderly. However, it is quiet difficult to incorporate into the original design plan all the future needs coming from the ageing of the residents. There should be many cases where it is more appropriate to make changes as needs arise. In this study, we have conducted two surveys. 1) Design plans of the 256 houses shown in the catalogs of the house building companies and the plans of the 60 houses actually built were studied to assess the current status of adopting the "barrier-free" design. We have made a checklist for this study and have used this checklist for assessment. 2) For the existent 60 houses, we made renovation plans accommodate to the living with wheelchairs. Then, we listed up the changes needed to make. We also studied the reasons for not being able to accommodate such changes in the original design plan of the house, taking the individual circumstance of each family into considerations. Through the analysis of the survey results, we have re-classified the contents of the guidelines based on the needs for the future renovation. Physical capabilities of the aged residents have been classified into three (3) levels and appropriate application of the guidelines to each level has been clarified. 続きを見る

概要: Residents in the "group homes" for the elderly people with dementia spend a lot of time in the common activity areas. It is well recognized that these common spaces are playing important roles in the group home life. Besides the legally required common areas such as dining rooms and living rooms, some group homes have additional sub-common activity areas. At three group homes in Hokkaido, we have conducted the time study on daily activities of the residents (where and what the residents are doing), employing the behavior observation method as well as the interviews with the care staff. Purpose of this study is to clarify the influences on the life style of the residents coming from the different kinds of physical environments. Based on the findings, we are to establish a basic guideline for the planning of the sub-common spaces in the future group homes. On the survey day, behavior maps were drawn every 10 minutes from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Some of the results obtained from this study are shown below. Unexpectedly, the sub-common spaces were not so well utilized by the residents. Therefore, it is quite difficult to determine if these sub-common spaces are giving influence on the life style of the residents or not. With the better and more active utilization of such sub-common spaces by the group home managements, these spaces could play more important roles for the residents. Due attention should also be paid to the physical environments when such sub-common areas be included in the space planning of the group homes. 続きを見る

概要: In the government reports on the handicapped persons published in December, 2002, it was stipulated that the persons with intellectual handicap should only be housed in the special facilities when there is a real need to do so. In other words, the basic government policy was clarified as to promote the "community life"(living at home) rather than the "confined life"(living in the specialized facilities). The purpose of this study is to find out the difficulties and their remedies in regard to the housing environments experienced by the families who have intellectually handicapped members. Through the analysis of their experiences, we have tried to set the guidlines for the future planning of the living environment for these families. Most of the families preferred to live together at home, as long as the parents were in good health conditions. However, most of them were considering the possibility to send the intellectually handicapped members to the group homes in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to think about the supports on the living environments from two sides; 1) space planning and privacy considerations at the individual homes and 2) community supports in general including the supports to the facilities like group homes. By offering these supports, we should be able to realize more friendly society for the mentally handicapped persons. 続きを見る
